Roller skating marathon world cup held in Harbin
2019- 07- 24

The 2019 Harbin Roller Skating Marathon World Cup -- part of a general move by the city to encourage mass participation in sport -- took place in the capital of Heilongjiang province on July 21.

The world-class event invited some 12,000 roller skating enthusiasts from 12 countries and regions to Harbin to come and display their skills and test their physical fitness.

In addition, 33 international professional athletes and 1,304 domestic professional athletes gathered in the city to compete for medals. Participants included skaters from Belgium, Spain, Italy, New Zealand, Germany, France, Slovenia, Colombia and Kenya.

The event was divided into 10 competition groups with a 42-kilometer race, a 24-km race, an 18-km race, a 12-km race, a 6-km race and the 3 to 4-km races, according to the organizing committee.

It was the third time Harbin has held this kind of event since 2017.

Organizers said it set new records for both the numbers of competitors and the size of the event.

Roller skating originates from skating in winter, but it has less strict venue and equipment requirements than skating.

Harbin was chosen as the host city for the event due to its ideal climate. Located in the high latitude of the Northern Hemisphere, Harbin experiences freezing weather for around six months of each year, providing excellent conditions for winter sports such as skating.
